Miniature Mondays: Eye of the Beholder

excerpts_mm2_0508

Beauty, as they say, is in the eye of the beholder. Unfortunately, that word is trademarked in this context, and ‘beauty is in the eye of the eye beast’ is not half so clever. To make up for that though, we have several lovely paintjobs, and a couple different min related projects just posted on Kickstarter.

Digital Patronage

multitask

Last year there was a study that concluded various smart devices in your life allow you to multi-task and make the most of your time to such an extent that they save 20 days of your life. But what do people do with all that extra time?

If I had to guess I would say Facebook and watch cat videos on the internet, but at least a few people use all that extra time to create wonderful content.

Some of my favorites include:

Epic Rap Battles of History

Talented Vocalists

Amazing Violinists

All of these performances require at least two things: talent and time. How do the people that occupy my spare moments on the internet get compensated for all the joy they bring to my life? Traditionally I would say ad revenue and merchandising, but fortunately now that we live in the future, there are other ways.

Digital Hoarding

032612lunchhealthcol1_512x288

Do you torrent/rip/back up every movie you have ever enjoyed? Do you visit Gog.com regularly, looking for games that you loved back in the day, even though they border on unplayable and nostalgia is their key feature? Do you have a terabyte hard drive full of  files you haven’t quite managed to sift through?

I certainly feel your pain – from time to time the primitive part nerd-brain compels me to track down a season of this show or a story arc of that comic book. Surely the cloud will save us all from these impulses.

Too bad someone has already turned this urge into a business model.

Kickstarter Roleplaying Game Roundup!

Roundup!Hello weekend!  It’s been a long but fruitful week, but the weekend couldn’t come soon enough!  I haven’t had many brain cells to spare this week, but I have had some time to peruse Kickstarter!  In my wanderings, I was delighted to find a selection of interesting tabletop games.  These are more modest projects than the games that have been setting records lately, and that is refreshing, in my opinion.  These are the kinds of projects that actually need help to succeed, and each of the projects we’re going to look at merits some attention (and just maybe, some of you hard-earned money). With that in mind, tonight we have for your reading a pleasure, a Kickstarter roleplaying roundup!

Peek below the fold for the deets.

Is this what Kickstarter is For?

mzl.vwhflkla

At the rate of increase in new projects it will someday be impossible for me glance at each new project as it shows up on the Kickstarter website. It is not uncommon to see a hundred new projects launch on any given day anymore. I estimate that perhaps 10% of those projects are relaunches, but even so, that is a lot of activity – a fivefold increase in projects from when I started this habit a little over a year ago.

It makes it harder and harder to catch the ones the ones that are worth talking about, either because they are awesome, or terrible. Today’s project almost slipped through the cracks in fact, and even after I found it, it has left me conflicted.

Monday Miniatures: The Witch

Feiya-Piazo.com

As I get back into the habit of painting again on a weekly basis, this week we continue on with our bones painting spree with the witch. This week we have 4 different witches to look at, but first let’s take a look at this week’s miniature projects on Kickstarter.

Imitation is Flattery

2203520-kickstarter_badge_funded

They say that imitation is the highest form of flattery.  If thats true, I’d argue that parody is the surest sign of relevance.   Regular reader/resident paint-slinger Clint turned our attention towards a recent YouTube upload that may indicate just how relevant Kickstarter is becoming in the mainstream.

A Summer of Disappointment

Elysium

Now that we’re in summer’s lame duck session—that period after Labor Day, but before the actual start of Fall—it’s time to reflect on passing of the summer movie season.  I started the Summer with such high hopes:  there was a veritable cornucopia of genre films on deck, and comparably few franchise entries (though quite a number of wannabe franchise kick-offs).  I was looking forward to a whirlwind of novelty (well, by Hollywood standards, anyway) to help me get over franchise fatigue I’ve been feeling, but what I got was a steaming pile of disappointment.

Monday Miniatures: The Alchemist

PZO1115-Damiel

Ages ago, when I first started this segment, the main reason was to encourage people to paint more. Specifically though, I wanted people to paint the reaper minis when they came out.

Well, this week we are going to finally get that particular show on the road. This week Clint, Jessica, and I each painted the alchemist. Hopefully after a few weeks of this we can get some other Reaper backers to jump in.
