Lately I will admit that I have had more unkind things about Kickstarter, especially where board games are concerned. I wouldn’t say that the funding mechanism has lost its luster to me – I still see plenty of projects I want to give money to. Maybe it is my inability to spend money on crowdfunding that is leading me to focus on the problematic projects: its the only way I can keep my mind off the projects I want to give money to.
Perhaps familiarity simply breeds contempt. I was ready to be outraged when saw that DC was launching an indiegogo campaign, but after taking a look at their not for profit campaign to trade swag for money to feed hungry kids I quickly became more interested. Perhaps there is not always smoke where there is fire; that in a nutshell is what I want to discuss today.
This week everything comes in pairs. much like my painting output, activity on the Kickstarter front seems to have fallen off a cliff, though on the bright side there is at least one project I am seriously interested in. If you want to see what that is, by all means read on!
To date I have backed quite a few Kickstarter projects, but haven’t seen many materialize. Not that I am concerned or anything – these things take time. When I do get them though, I like to let you, my readers, know. This isn’t just to give you my two cents (though I do,) but to help legitimize this sometimes shaky service – people need to know that these things do deliver (even if “better late than never” is the unofficial motto of Kickstarter.)
This week I talk about a boardgame – one of the first I ever backed. Want to know more? Read on.
Thanks to the magnitude of medical and dental bills, I have been forced to take a break from crowdfunding for the last month. As always though, I remain an active member of the audience. Sometimes this is as cheerleader for the projects I love, as sometimes I am a self appointed marshal against projects that I think violate the rules of my favorite crowdfunding sites in spirit or letter.
This last week, while I have been keeping a weather eye out for miniature related projects, I stumbled on a few projects of my second favorite flavor. Were these more minimalist wallets? Perhaps a few ‘save our movie theater?’ No, no – I’m afraid these sorts of projects are far more elusive if you want to find out more you will have to keep reading.
Once again, I am living out of a hotel room, and my week remains ridiculously hectic. This means that I still haven’t had time to do any painting. I did, however make time to scour Kickstarter and bring the rest of you the juicy details. This week there were more miniature related projects than I have ever seen on Kickstarter. Unfortunately, as is so often the case, it looks like quality is inversely proportional to quantity.
What do I mean by that? Keep reading to find out!

Bioshock Infinite is the greatest game ever. At least this week it is.
I’ve been blessed with a slightly slackened schedule this week (before hitting the road again for a fortnight), and I’ve used the gift of downtime in the best way possible: catching up on some much needed gaming. It’s especially fortuitous that such an amaze balls game came out at just the right moment to allow me to enjoy it before I get back to the salt mines. But you know, this game is just so epic, it’s got my brain spinning in a lot of directions.
No, I didn’t have a chance to paint this week, and no I didn’t find any must-buy projects you should definitely pledge to. So why is it about damn time then?
Reaper is shipping their Kickstarter. Though it could be two months before some of the more prodigious backers (that would be me) see their rewards, those that pledged in a more basic way, sans add-ons could see their rewards this week or next. Even though this fulfillment pattern doesn’t favor me, I am still happy they did it this way – getting the most rewards out as soon as possible is only fair.
I also saw updates from the Imbrian and Alien Host projects, so even if there wasn’t much in the way of new projects to get excited about, I still found all the news on the older projects to be completely engrossing. If you want to see what new projects are up for grabs though, by all means – keep reading.
Greetings backers:
If you are regular readers of the blog, you will know that Chris and I have been insanely busy the last few weeks. So much so, that we have had to reduce the posting frequency of this blog, and slow down or pause several other side projects.
Sometime’s life gets in the way, as I am sure that all of you know, but this project, “The Wardenclyffe Horror,” is a priority, and progress continues to be made. This isn’t just because it is our dream to see it in print, but because we could do no less for all of you who made its funding possible. At present our art continues to be behind schedule, though with a month to go until our target date for completion, our artist swears we will meet the deadline. If all goes well, this time next month we should be sending pages off to the printers.
This project has a fairly long time line, and we appreciate your patience. To show our thanks, we would like to share some of the opening pages. This isn’t enough to spoil the story, but we hope that the quality of the artwork will be enough to whet your appetite.
Click on any above the above pictures for larger (and more readable) versions. I think you will all agree that the artwork is coming out even better than the first few pages you have already been shown. If you have any feedback, we would love to hear it!
Nerd-fession time. I am not a huge anime fan. I don’t know what it is, but it’s never really turned my crank. I mean, I’ve enjoyed animes (mostly classics, like Akira, Vampire Hunter D, and Ninja Scroll), but I’ve never been a devoted fan. It’s something about the storytelling style. Or maybe it’s the animation. I honestly can’t say.
That said, I’ve always had a curious interest in games inspired by anime. Exalted, my favorite tabletop RPG, owes a lot to anime style (bigass swords, battle auras, attack with cool names, among others), and I quite enjoyed the simple, stylish system of the dearly departed Big Eyes, Small Mouth. So my curiosity at the recently released Tenra Bansho Zero comes as little surprise to me. Let me tell you about this little gem of a game.
