Monday Miniatures: Kavorgh

77064_w_1This week I didn’t finish. I didn’t even come close. Work was a terror: my Friday work day didn’t end until 3am Saturday, and My Sunday was devoured by phone calls managing dozens of work related problems. When it rains it pours right?

That’s okay though, because apparently it’s stormy all over: almost no one else found time to paint either. Maybe it’s because tax season is coming to a close, who knows.

Cinematic Tie-in’s Give Agents of SHIELD New Life

hydraABC’s Agents of SHIELD is kind of awesome.  There, I said it.  It hasn’t always been so, but the show has been on a general upswing since Thor: The Dark World brought some Asgard-sized problems to Agent Coulson’s door.  Even then, the show sort of meandered along until episodes began to delve into the mystery surrounding the Son of Coul’s trip to Tahiti following the events of the Avengers.  But it’s really with the release of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and all the hoopla and consequences that follow, that AOS’s awesome knob got turned to eleven.

3D Printing for the Masses on Kickstarter

My cats would eat that thing to death…

While some of the technology crowd funding news has been less than encouraging of late, it hasn’t stopped plucky backers from supporting technology projects they believe in.  The project of the hour is the Micro 3D printer by M3D, “the first truly consumer 3D printer.”

What’s a little fraud between friends?

GOBEThe latest controversy to hit the crowd funding scene is all about the GoBe by Healbe, a wearable device that promises to take the all of the nitty-gritty detail work of self-tracking calorie intake and exercise by measuring glucose levels through a wrist-watch like bracelet.  The problem?  It appears to be completely bogus.  And it has already taken Indiegogo members for nearly a million dollars.

A Wardenclyffe Update

This week is exceptionally hectic for me. Work is basicly devouring my life.

Over the last decade, I remember wondering why so few people accomplished their dream projects. It always seemed to me that the income streams that came with professional employment would catalyse them, and help those dreams reach fruition. It turns out that things aren’t quite so simple. More on this another time.

I am currently working on a longer and more comprehensive update for the backers to be sent out in the near future, but the short answer is:

  • With the exception of three physical checks I need to put in the mail and 2 backers who need to respond to further questions, all backers have been repaid.
  • Caffeineforge is currently broke thanks to taxes and refunds.
  • We are currently starting to hunt for talent to lay the ground work for a relaunch of the project later this year. We are _this_ close to being able to close out the books on the last project.

I would prefer that we were working on the launch of our second or third project and charging full steam ahead, but perseverance is valuable too, and I am confident that this time we will succeed.

Monday Miniatures: Janan

77039_w_1

Now that the hydra has finished decimating our free time, this week we return to our normal practice of a smaller miniature every week. This week is Janan, the dragon slayer. Though the range of colors is not as much as it might typically be some weeks, the level of detail is really staggering. Take a look.

TMNT & Hollywood Strangeness

Megan Fox in the Teenage Mutant Ninja TurtlesLooking back, I’d say that alongside Star Wars, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is the property that was most influential in shaping my interests in all things geek.  As a kid, I fell in love with the classic cartoon (dat theme song!), and was intrigued when a friend’s older brother introduced me to the gritty, gonzo world of the original Eastman & Laird comics.  Hell, I loved the turtles so much, I even saw them live and in concert.  While I sometimes go years between visits, TMNT is a brand I always return to when I want to connect with my childhood (though, I must say, I prefer the comics now to the animations).  TMNT is important to me, which is why the new trailer for Michael Bay’s… interpretation of the turtles has me feeling a bit like Eric Cartman.

Oculus and Facebook, Sitting in a Tree…

OculusRift1Anyone tuned into the tech or crowd funding scene has undoubtedly already heard the big news of the day:  Facebook is acquiring Kickstarter success Oculus and their flagship product, the Rift VR headset.  Coverage and opinions on the acquisition abound, making this perhaps the biggest news story to ever cast a light on the crowd-funding community.  Since we here at Caffeineforge are champions of the institution of crowd funding, I couldn’t let this story pass by without proffering my own 2% of a dollar.
