Monday Miniature – Chimera Part I

77257_w_1

Since this is a large and quite detailed miniature, we’ll do (and show) the Chimera in two steps. That’s only fair, I mean, with its three heads it could even count as three creatures, right? 😀

Without much ado, here is Dirk’s prepared chimaera:

He is planning to do a classic /Ancient Greek beast, so he carved a column out of styrofoam and used it as a scenic detail for the creature – looks great, doesn’t it?

I liked working on the chimera, it has good detail and (in my case at least) not too much flashing/mold lines to clean. Unfortunately the gaps between the separate parts (mostly around the wings, the dragon’s head and over the back) were quite large, and I had to use a lot of filler – I used liquid green stuff – to fill them.

Other that that, base coating was really fun:

I wanted a diffent look than “standard” chimera, so I used a certain “template” as in D&D modifier. Can you guess which type of chimaera this is going to be?

William wrote he also enjoyed painting the model, which he did during his last “weekend painting party” with his kids. The have established a weekly routine  which the children are really looking forward to – fantastic, isn’t it? Wonderful way to paint and spend creative time with your family 🙂

I like the look of this WIP, an it reminds me of something… I don’t know, perhaps a classic illustration or something from an RPG? William, where did you get your inspiration for this color scheme from?

That’s it for the week, and if you are thinking about painting the chimera, just jump in and join the fun! Just send us your pics and we show them (off) here 😀

Coming next:

  1. Hi all, I started with a different color scheme (brownish), but haven’t found time to take and process a picture. I will try to send an advanced WIP this week as I will be away the next weekend.

  2. I really like Dirk’s base, I bet the columns will look great when painted. And I have no idea what template Antonia is referring to, but I am digging the purple wings.

I wish I could say the color scheme was inspired by some classic art piece – but the fact is I just made it up. Once I decided on a natural golden color for the lion, and grey for the goat, then red seemed to complement the remaining colors very naturally. The combination of Reaper tanned leather and oiled leather made for a really nice combination on the lion parts. And the shade of grey was mixed by my daughter for her peryton, but she made a little too much and so I borrowed some 🙂
