Miniature Monday – Wraith (Updated)

Like a low whisper the wraith appears, ready to slice you apart. Do you dare to cross its path?

(posting by Antonia)

First, a short announcement: We will be busy preparing for a family meeting the next two weeks so we’ll just move the whole painting schedule one spot ahead. Two more weeks for all of you to catch up or prepare for the future minis, have fun!

This week’s article will be a basic one, I’m afraid, because daycare has closed for the holidays and I’m writing this at the expense of sleep *sigh*

Anyway, in short: The mini is okay, the cloth looks realistic enough, although my mini had a big mould line on both sides which was annoying to remove because of all the layers of cloth.

I painted my wraith in classic dark “ring wraith” style and tried a simple glow effect:

I used a simple black base coat with grey drybrush and dark wash, then added the glow in white and pale blue – in RL it looks okay, but unfortunately the camera ups the contrast way to much. Maybe I’ll do something with it in Photoshop once I have the time, but until then you get the idea.

Dirk’s mini is a harbinger of rot and decay.

It’s a WIP, we tried to get the “Nurgle” flair by using a mixture of brown and green with some rusty orange on the scythe. The handle was bent, but it works with the Nurgle theme so we just used it that way.

Michael also tried a glow effect:

He wrote: “I nearly forgot to send this in. I finished the Reaper back in January, I think before it was put on the schedule. He’s pretty simple. I put a glob of water effect inside his hood, trying to make a glowing orb kind of effect, but it didn’t turn out super well. The one detail I like would be the glowing spectral fingers on the scythe handle. ”

The fingers are an awesome idea! Why didn’t I think of this?

Jim tried different techniques:

He said: “This mini is one I like better in plastic than in metal. I think it’s the scythe, which looks better on the Bones version. I just started with black and highlighted up from there, but it doesn’t look too bad. I also tried some Color Shift paint on the scythe blade and drybrushed a little on the handle. I’m not sure if I’m sold on it but maybe I just need to do a little more experimentation.”

The shimmer on the handle is a cool effect for sure, unfortunately from that angle the blade is not really visible though.

Update:

Arjen sent us his version of the wraith:

He wrote: “A very simple mini and a basic paintjob. The only trick I did here was a grey gradient that makes the whole mini look uniform grey, while the top is actually lighter than the lower parts, so that the inside of the hood looks very black. I think that worked well. I also tried to make the scythe blade silvery white, but sort of failed there. Well, you have to keep trying new things.”

Agreed! When I check the mini cabinet and see how far we have come while doing miniature monday, it’s great to see how our painting skills have developed over time, especially by experimenting and leaving our comfort zones. The “high contrast shadow” works very well, by the way!

This week’s gallery:

Coming next:

08/19/19 Bones II Alistrilee, Elven Archer (B2 Core)

Want to participate in the next post? Email the pictures of your minis until Friday 08/16/19 to

MondayMiniature@fantasymail.de  (It’s a .de domain, in case emails are bouncing)

–> Attention: The submission date for photos is about three days before publishing date, to give us a bit of time to actually write about your pictures  😀

This way you’ll have two weeks/one weekend to paint, and we have one weekend to write (which is the only time of the week where we have some open minutes).

You can of course send in pics later, but to take out a bit of the stress (most pics arrive here rather last minute) please consider the three day deadline. Later pics will still show up in an update  😉

I added tons of miniatures to the schedule now. We might still shuffle them around, do extras (like “Show me your project!”) or add more, just tell us what you think in the comments!

–> Since reaper re-organized their online shop recently, some of the links might not be working anymore. Until we come around to fix that you can always use the miniature’s name and use the search box on top of the page.

08/05/19 Break Day

08/19/19 Bones II Alistrilee, Elven Archer (B2 Core)

09/02/19 Bones III Sigurd, Viking (B3 Core)

09/16/19 Bones III Brotherhood of the Seal (B3 Core)

09/30/19 Bones II Mi-Sher, Sword Dancer (B2 Core)

After that we’ll line up some nice first picks from the Bones 4 Core Set. Any suggestions?

  1. Nice work everyone! Not much to add other than we all did a variation on the same black theme (well, maybe not Dirk’s).

Also, the break happens to work well for me, too, so no problems there.

  2. Not much to say on this one. Everyone had to make a decision as to how much color to add to add a little pop. As Jim said, Dirk went with the most for a different flavor, while it looks like Arjen went with the least (I like that greenish brown on the handle, though). Jim, I’d be interested in a different view of yours to see all the color on the scythe. Antonia and I had similar ideas.

We’re getting close to needing Bones 4 suggestions! There aren’t a ton of figures available on Reaper’s website right now, so I went back to the Kickstarter project page and scrolled down to the graphic that showed buying extra Core set pieces (the one with a blue border). There aren’t any numbers to identify the Core pieces, but they’re divided up a bit. These are the ones that I like the best.

    Monsters: the wyvern

Dire Beasts: the dire fiddler crab!!!!

Villagers: first row, second from the left – the very ordinary looking villager; as well as the sheriff or bandit – second row, second from the right

Adventurers: the wizard holding the orb (2nd row, 2nd from the left); and the guy with two swords on the left side, 2nd row from the bottom

Demons & Devils: Baba Yaga!! (I got her hut, which I’m sure I’ll get around to painting around the year 2056)

    Kobolds: pass

Snake Cultists: these could be interesting; any/all?

    Ape Attack: pass

Cave Dwellers: none of these stand out to me right now

Pathfinder Iconics: I like a lot of these, though I wouldn’t want to do a bunch back to back, as they tend to have a ton of detail work. My favorites are probably the Female Archer on the left; the guy with the skull; the guy with the cards; and the woman floating (on the right side)

    Goblins: pass

Small World Heroes: not interested in these

Horror: I like the classic creatures on the bottom; my favorites are Frankenstein’s creature and his bride

Elves: the one with the scythe

Sophie & Friends: I like these well enough, but don’t feel like picking one right now

I just stuck with the Cores, because I think the usual crowd all obtained one. I also did get the Chronoscope, Dreadmere, Darkreach, Lost Valley, and Fan Favorite sets (and a few of the other add-ons), but I can’t recall who else got any of those.

Also…….. I heard that they’re launching Kickstarter 5 in September. Yikes. Considering that I have yet to put paint on any of my KS4s for now, I think I’m going to have to be very, very selective this time around.

  3. I like the dire crab and the orb wizard as well. A lot of the villagers too. And the halfling with the axe (adventurers, second row). I looked that mini up and she is female with a nice braid, good to schedule between two more difficult minis.
