Monday Miniatures: Vaeloth

This week’s post is pretty emblematic for the reasons I like to these features. A new participant, and every color scheme unique.

Truth be told, I’m not really happy with how this guy turned out, but I did enjoy trying some new blending techniques, even if the results are suboptimal.

Vaeloth Magnus

Magnus went with a really interesting color scheme. What inspired it?

Vaeloth Arjen

Arjen went with a fiery color scheme that he found elsewhere. Sometimes the best way to learn a new technique is to try to copy one you really like from someone else.

Dave B

Dave B joins us for the first time. He has a lot of nice touches, but the freehand on the shield is my favorite bit, especially the faux planks to give the object texture.

Mr Brawly continues to reign in his light box. These are the clearest pictures yet. The background and palette also nice very well. Are you going to continue the free hand on the shield.

Antonia was delayed by the drying of her patent pendibg vogelglow (still waiting on that blog post) but the mini was definitely worth the wait. This mini straddles the line between colorfully fantastic and grounded in gritty texture.

2/15/15 – Battleguard Golem

2/22/15 – Large Earth Elemental – This one wasn’t a part of the vampire back, but it is a great mini with plenty of detail for the experienced model, and plenty of simple techniques could make it great as a beginner. If you don’t have it, it’s only 7 dollars – you should pick it up.

3/1/15 – Grandmother

3/8/15 – Ghoul Queen

3/15/15 – Teirdeleria

3/22/15 – Aina

3/29/15 – Spirit of the Forest

4/5/15 – Ezren

4/12/15 – Almaran

4/19/15 – Zalash

4/26/15 – Red Dragon – Week 1 – this is a big model, so this week are just looking for a WIP.

5/3/15 – Red Dragon – Week 2 – Now’s your chance to really show off. You’ve had 2 weeks and a gorgeous sculpt – blow me away.

  1. Hello everyone! Nice variations on the mini, so many different colors!
I’m still working on the guest post about glow/fire effects, and my wife Antonia painted this guy here in yet another color scheme. Her mail went out a bit late, unfortunately, but perhaps you can post the picture as an update 🙂 It will even have another little example of fire effect.

    • I will post the two that arrived late to my inbox after work. Typically I post things that arrive before 9pm mountain time. Unfortunately I get up for work about 430am, so I need my beauty sleep.

  2. David, I think you achieved the best “heroic tiefling” look of all the figures. The rest of ours look much more sinister by comparison. I really like all of the variety this week!

As for my paint scheme, it was inspired by Valen Shadowbreath from the “Neverwinter Nights” computer game. The resemblance is so strong that I suspect the latter was at least partial inspiration for the sculptor on this piece.

  3. I am a bit jalous of how Magnus’ eye turned out. Mine has sort of the same idea but turned out soso. It seems DavidB also chose a Derek Schubert color scheme (orange armor with red skirt), but did much more original things with it.
FYI: Derek is not only a heck of a painter, but also the guy who sculpted this mini.
What I learned from trying to copy Derek was the subtle highlight in the middle if the armor. It is surprisingly easy to do, while it immediately upgrades your mini to a new level. There is a lot of things I didn’t copy for lack of time, but just comparing what I didn’t achieve with what he did learns me a lot.
Didn’t have time to clean up the face, but given that my copy came out of the mold without a nose, I thought a battered look sort of suited him.

    • I hadn’t noticed Magnus’ work on the eyes but it is pretty fantastic. I usually avoid painting eyes, and this mini sorta confirms why. Arg.

My noseless fig sorta bothered me as well. Made his upper lip seem to be endlessly large.

I thought of trying to do a nice crawler type colour scheme, but I was hesitant to try and get the skin that deeply blue.

      Nice work everyone!

  4. I think the gold sword and shield on Magnus’ mini sort of take away attention from the nicely painted body. I think if it were my mini, I would try to age, to dull the gold a bit, to lessen the contrast. Mix brown and gold and apply everywhere except the edges, for instance. I hope you do not feel critisized too much, but your mini is almost brilliant and the one thing I do not like then becomes sort of an itch to me.

  5. These all look great. Dave B did a great job on that shield, and I love the color scheme of Arjen’s figure.

Unfortunately, I sold this figure with several others that didn’t fit into my world, but now I sort of regret that decision!

      • Monday was a slow day, as there was training, and working out the kinks in the system. Today should see close to 800-1000. Hopefully my wave 1 will be out the door today. I’d really like to have it by my long President’s Day weekend!

  6. It seems they did wave one in two days- wow! At that rate my wave three could be shipped at the end of the week. And then waiting two weeks for it to go through shipping and customs…

  7. Sorry guys.. I missed last week, and I might miss next week. Got my bones 2 in (!!!) and I’ve got to work a LOT this week. Love watching y’alls tho! Great job!!
