Miniature Monday – Adowyn, Hunter
Hunters have to blend in, in whichever environment their prey dwells, so they come in a great variety of colors. Have a look at our painter’s ideas!
(posting by Antonia)
Yay, a new article and only two days late! Who’d have guessed this! (But since the 3rd wave is already rising in Germany I won’t keep my hopes up yet, we’ll see how soon daycare is closed again and my/our amount of hobby time is reduced to zero again. *Sigh*)
Anyway, nice mini, a lot of detail, probably unrealistically much as one of our painters mentioned, considering Adowyn is supposed to sneak around despite being covered in little tokens and amulets… maybe they are enchanted and give her a +3 on move silently or something?
I tried a new technique:
I read about this in a White Dwarf magazine where a painter showed how she painted her chaos knights by basecoating them black, drybrushing in white to bring out all details and then using Citadel’s Contrast paints to add color. I loved the effect and decided to try it on this mini. The result is still a WIP and a bit too dark for my idea of a hunter (so now she’s a drow living in a corrupted underdark swamp or something *laughs*), plus I found that we are missing a couple of Contrast tones.
I tried to substitute with washes and inks (which proved difficult because these don’t are as strongly pigmented), but I still like the idea and will try it again, maybe on some evil knight/sorcerer, and also check how it looks on an organic surface. It’s not so much a technique for detailed painting of a single miniature, more of a way to get color on a lot of miniatures with a cool and dramatic shading that makes them look like some old fashioned RPG cover illustration.
Dirk went “50 shades of white” with this one:
When he saw the miniature he immediately thought “ice/winter” because of all the fur. He started from an off-white base coat (skeleton bone) and went on painting all the different areas in different shades of white (blue-ish, grey-ish etc.). To go all they way towards the “snow dwelling hunter” he decided to paint Adowyn as an ice elf (firn elf in DSA) with blue skin and white hair.
He found this paintjob an interesting experiment and also tried wet blending on the coat and was happy with the result.
Jim painted her in natural colors (and materials):
He wrote: “Adowyn may be an Iconic Hunter (per Pathfinder) but it seems to me her outfit and equipment are a bit cumbersome, restrictive and even potentially noisy. That said she ended up being a fairly nice mini to paint. I tried to stay in the brown and green range for her clothes and did her armor as leather, which seemed appropriate for a hunter or ranger. I think there are only two metallic spots on the entire mini: The end of the sword scabbard and the belt buckle. I probably went a little too bright on the colors and the green skirt looks almost blue! I wasn’t too keen to paint all the detail on the front but I kept it simple and I’m pleased with the result as well as the quiver on her back. I also meant to include a wolf in the pic with her, but forgot.”
Timothy used greens and browns too with red hair:
I really like how the red hair and the green armour look together! The green, brown combo makes for a very classic color scheme.
Michael had a very cool idea for an inspiration:
He said: “I’ve attached my hunter. I actually didn’t look at the art at all on this one. Instead I painted her in the style of the Water Tribe from the Avatar animated series. I also used some Army Painter snow terrain on the base.”
I love the idea! In their way, the designs from Avatar are very iconic too, so it totally works.
Matthias’s hunter brought her animal companion:
He wrote: “Adowyn is my first mini I share with you and I am excited to see how others painted her (and if anybody remembered she has a wolf companion, Leryn).
I wanted to paint her as she’s still in the Fangwood where she first teamed up with her companion Leryn to survive the omnipresent dangers of the Blight. I imagine the morning sun coming up (as when I was making the foto) and some sound or smell alarms them to an imminent attack. For that reason I reassembled her pose and worked a paper clip so that it looked as if she had nocked an arrow – ever ready hunter as she is.”
Awesome base, really! And welcome to the the page, the project and our family of painters and readers! Looking forwart to seeing your future contributions 🙂

Want to participate in the next post? Email the pictures of your minis until Friday 04/02/21 to
MondayMiniature@fantasymail.de (It’s a .de domain, in case emails are bouncing)
–> Attention: The submission date for photos is about three days before publishing date, to give us a bit of time to actually write about your pictures
This way you’ll have two weeks/one weekend to paint, and we have one weekend to write (which is the only time of the week where we (might, *sigh*) have some open minutes).
You can of course send in pics later, but to take out a bit of the stress (most pics arrive here rather last minute) please consider the three day deadline. Later pics will still show up in an update
Here is the link to Reaper’s graphic with all the core pieces, but it’s one and veeeery long picture so be prepared for some scrolling. On the other hand it has separate numbers for most of the pieces. I will add individual shop links as soon as they appear!
