2014 another year for serious Sci-Fi?

Winter SoldierHave you ever reflected on the course of a year and been struck by just how many more “downs” there were than “ups?”  Its been one of those years for me, and on this blustery Friday the 13th I can’t shake the feeling that ‘if years were seasons, than this December would be the December of our December.’ But no matter how bleak things might be, I’ll always have the movies.  And like this year, next year is looking might promising for fans of genre films.

Peek below to see what Hollywood’s cooking up for next year.

Before I get ahead of myself, it’s important to note that 2013 is far from over.  At least two big releases are inbound, including this weekend’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and Christmas day’s 47 Ronin (say what you will about how 47 Ronin doesn’t jive with the traditional story, watch that trailer and tell me that doesn’t look like a blast…).  Needless to say, I’ll be seeing both of those soon.  However, they’re not the films that have me buzzing about the future.

First up is Jupiter Ascending, a new sci-fi epic by the Wachowski’s.  This has all the hallmarks of a rock solid space opera–expansive galactic empires, cool spaceships, gunslinging space elves (or at least Channing Tatum wearing pointy ears).  What’s not to love?  Of course, I was really excited for the Wachowski’s last “blockbuster,” and I don’t think I’ll ever get those hours (was it only hours?  Felt like days…) back.

Next up in the unexpected adaptation category is  Edge of Tomorrow, an adaptation of the most curious Japanese novel, All You Need is Kill.  Tom Cruise stars as a power armored soldier caught in a time loop at the time of his death in an assault on an alien stronghold.  Like Bill Murray in Groundhog’s Day, Tom Cruise uses his cycle of resurrection to become increasingly badass and figure out the puzzle of why he’s caught in the loop.  Only unlike Groundhog’s Day, Edge of Tomorrow has power armor and spaceships…

Another recent trailer that has my heart all a-flutter is for Godzilla.  Frequent readers of the blog know of my obsession with Pacific Rim, or as its known around these parts (these parts meaning my brain) as the “greatest film of all time.”  Well, Godzilla is where the kaiju genre began, and this film seems intent on honoring that legacy.  Look at the scale!  This Godzilla doesn’t plod among the buildings like the up-jumped iguana in that dreadful Mathew Broderkick movie, it freaking towers over them.  Its gonna take a helluva lot more than Gypsy Danger to put the kibosh on the big lizard this time…

Three epic trailers in the past week, and I’ve got to say 2014 is looking up.  I mean, sure this time last year we had trailers for Elysium, Oblivion, and After Earth, but you have to admit that these look a lot better right out of the gate. And in the end, if they go south, we’ve got the Winter Soldier, Days of Future Past, Robocop, and the final installment of the Hobbit to keep us warm…

It’s going to be a good year.
